NEW YORK, Sept. 21 – The United States and Britain conferred with other governments at the United Nations today on calling an emergency meeting of the Security Council over a reported Syrian invasion of Jordan. Whether the meeting would be called hinged on Jordan’s wishes.

Ambassador Charles W. Yost, chief of the U.S. delegation, talked during the weekend with Ambassador Muhammad H. El-Farrah.

Concern over the Middle East crisis cast a shadow over the opening of the annual U.N. General Assembly. Secretary of State William P. Rogers, had been scheduled to make a major statement of Nixon administration foreign policy today, but was compelled to cancel this.

Yost will Tell Views

Yost will take Rogers’ place to state Washington’s views next Monday or Tuesday. He also will take over as host at a luncheon of African foreign ministers and at other affairs.

Britain’s foreign minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home will talk to Rogers about the Middle East Wednesday in Washington instead of New York. He is tentatively scheduled to return here to speak before the assembly on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Foreign Minister Nassim Majdalany charged in the assembly today that “Israel seeks to destroy Lebanon from within and without.” He claimed that Israel sought by aggression to prod 300,000 Palestine refugees on Lebanon’s soil into civil war.
